New Found Gap

New Found Gap is the pass between North Carolina and Tennessee in the central part of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Winter snows often block this only highway (US-441) across the Smokys. It is usually reopened as soon as the snowstorm lets up and the plows have time to clear the passage. Due to landslides, US-64 and I-40 are currently blocked making US-441 all the more important. Commercial traffic is not allowed to use US-441 in the national park so commercial east/west traffic is being directed either north to I-81 near Virginia or south to US-76 in Georgia. It is a long way out of the way either way!
